World Bee Day, that’s what. Taking place on 20th May each year, it celebrates the humble bee – aka one of the hardest-working creatures in the animal kingdom.
Bees are crucial to the health of our planet. A third of the world’s food production depends on them and they help reduce pollution. Yet, they are at increasing risk of extinction. World Bee Day aims to spread awareness of their value and help protect them.
Of course, the bee already has a special significance in Manchester. Symbolising the area’s industrial history, there are worker bees dotted across the city.
Here are some of the things you can do this summer to show your love of all things bee (and look BEE-utiful while you’re at it).
Spot the bees, city-wide
Locals and visitors alike can spot the bee symbol across the city – on bollards, benches, buildings, bins and more. The city’s town hall proudly displays a coat of arms featuring a bee, and more can be found at Spring Gardens, Deansgate tram stop and Manchester Cathedral. Take a stroll and see how many you can spot.
Beekeeping and observation hive, Heaton Park
Covering 600 acres, Heaton Park has a lot to offer. From the boating lake and bowling greens, the park is a hive of activity. It’s also the place to get your bee-fix. You might want to attend one of the beekeeping courses. And every Sunday, you can watch the bees in the observation hive and buy a pot of Heaton Park honey. Find out more.
Entomagical, Manchester Craft & Design Centre
Artist Anna Collette Hunt has created a collection of insects (including bees) to reflect the hive mentality of the city. Her display showcases the wonder of the natural world and the role of hives as places of creative activity. Open until 26th Aug 2023. Find out more.
