Swim season is nearly upon us. But while you’re dreaming about summer getaways and lazy days at the lido, make sure to gather swimsuit inspo along the way.

2023’s swimwear trends certainly deliver. From tried-and-tested classics to fresh silhouettes, this year’s bumper bonanza can help you create your perfect holiday look. Not got your summer holiday plans nailed down yet? Check out the top ten trending travel destinations in 2023 and get booking.

In the meantime, here are some of our favourite swimwear trends making a splash on a beach near you.

Retro

Retro prints and styles graced the swimwear catwalks in spring – and are sure to be seen poolside this summer. With their vintage vibes, high-waisted bottoms and 50s-style tops are super flattering. These floral print bikini bottoms by Ted Baker (and matching top) are one part playful, two parts punchy. Other retro trends to look out for include ruffles, ribbons and bows.

Embellishments

The ring or chain detail trend is not for the faint-hearted. Metal or resin hardware replaces things like straps, clasps and strings, and are sure to make a style statement. Saying that, you can be as bold or as subtle as you want with the detailing. But as well as turning heads, embellished swimwear has another key advantage. It negates the need to wear (and potentially lose) any jewellery when hitting the beach.

Triangle bikinis

Is it just us, or are certain swimwear styles shrinking this summer? If an itty-bitty bikini is how you like to roll, you’re in for a treat. The classic triangle style is back with its barely-there silhouette and simplicity. Paired with the matching tie-string bottoms, this reversible bikini top by Ted Baker gives off truly tropical holiday vibes circa 1992.

Cut-outs

Offering more coverage than a bikini but more edge than a one-piece, cutouts expose just the right amount of flesh in all the right places. This year’s cutouts are a toned down, sleeker version of what we’ve seen before. Just don’t think about the tan lines (and remember to pack plenty of SPF).

Black one-piece

Keep things fuss-free this year with a straight-up, no-strings-attached black swimsuit. Like the LBD, the LBS (little black swimsuit) never goes out of fashion. Whether you’re taking a pedalo for a spin or snapping selfies in the beach bar, a classic black one-piece will see you right all summer long. This chic black swimsuit by Vila is the perfect way to look cool as the temperature rises.

Asymmetric

With one-shoulder necklines already in our wardrobes, it’s no surprise this trend has made it to our swimwear picks, as well. Whether you go for a one-shoulder one-piece, a one-shoulder one-piece with cutout, or a one-shoulder bikini, these asymmetric beauties offer classy poolside styling. Team with a pair of oversized sunnies and summer is yours for the taking.
