Barbie – a quick potted history
Did you know that this iconic doll was actually the brainchild of Ruth Handler, the wife of Mattel toy company founder Elliot?
After searching for an adult doll for her little girl to play with, she was inspired by the Bild Lilli doll on a trip to Germany. She pitched the idea to her husband and the rest, as they say, is history.
Barbie burst onto the scene in 1959, with her trademark blonde hair, blue eyes, red lips, and zebra-striped swimming costume. Sound familiar? If you’ve got one hiding in your attic, it could now be worth over £25,000!
She had to wait another two years before Ken came on the scene but they’ve been inseparable ever since. A relationship of over 60 years - that’s pretty good going.
While our career histories may never become as prolific as Barbie’s – pilot, skater, astronaut, president – children everywhere could live out their dreams through this iconic doll and she became beloved by kids all over the world.
From historical figures to celebrities, Barbie models have reflected great women of our time. Most recently, British space scientist Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock was honoured with a one-off Barbie made in her likeness to celebrate International Women’s Day and British Science Week. How cool is that?
Barbie on the big screen
So when can you catch Barbie on the big screen? The Barbie movie is set for release on 21st July 2023 in the UK, and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the loved-up forever girlfriend-boyfriend pair.
The plot is being kept under wraps but we’ve done a little digging and it seems as though beauty - both inside and out - is going to be a big theme for Greta Gerwig’s PG-rated flick.
